The Difference Between Store & Manufacturer Coupons

How To Get FREE Coupons!

In order to understand how to stack coupons, you will first need to know the difference between store coupons and manufacturer coupons.

Store coupons:

  • Are issued by the store they are providing the discount.
  • Can generally only be redeemed at that particular store.*
  • Often let you buy more than one item with the coupon .
  • Can be found in weekly ads, mailers, in store, and occasionally, Sunday inserts or online .

*Unless a store in your area accepts competitor coupons.

Manufacturer coupons:

  • Are issued by the manufacturer and read manufacturer at the top.
  • Can be used at ANY store that accepts manufacturer coupons.
  • Prohibit you to ONE coupon per item purchased.
  • Can be found in Sunday inserts, online, blinkie machines, tearpads, booklets, etc.

To Get Repeat Business

Some promotions require consumers to use a reward on their next visit to the store. Such coupons draw customers into the store once to buy something and get a coupon, and again to buy something else and use the coupon.

In a 2019 report by Valassis, an omnichannel marketing platform, out of 1,000 consumers, 92% are bargain hunters using coupons, and more than 45% use coupons most of the time.

For example, an Albertsons’ grocery store promotion gave customers a coupon for $10 off their next visit when they purchased $100 in qualifying gift cards.

Even if the customer did the bare minimum and walked out with $10 in free groceries on the follow-up visit, that customer might be more likely to come back in the future after having gained some familiarity with the store when they did their coupon shopping.

Other customers will spend beyond the coupon limit, so the store might profit from the promotion right away. Also, the promotion notified customers that Albertsons is a place where they can buy gift cards, which means that the store might gain business the next time that customer wants to purchase a gift card.

Stacking Coupons Level : Do All Of The Above And Pay For It With A Discounted Gift Card

Whats a discounted gift card? Its an unused gift card someone sold to a third-party company like Raise.com because they didnt think they were going to use it. The cool part is that Raise.com turns around and sells that same gift card for less than its face value, resulting in a discount for you.

So, if you find a $50 Walmart gift card for $47.50, thats 5% savings! The store doesnt know or care that its a discounted gift card its still a valid form of payment and it stacks with everything.

How Do Store Coupons Work

If you have ever used coupons at the grocery store, then you know the routine. You cut coupons out of newspapers and magazines, take them to the store and use them to get discounts on certain products. A coupon is the same as cash. For example, if you have a $1.00 off coupon on a box of cereal, the cashier takes the coupon as though it were cash. It’s not that common any more, but some stores will even double a coupon’s face value.

Once the cashier accepts the coupon, the store has a problem. It now has a small scrap of paper that is worth cash, but in order to get the cash the store has to mail the coupon to the manufacturer. On the back of most coupons in fine print, the manufacturer lists the mailing address and states that it will also reimburse the store some amount of money for processing — typically 8 cents per coupon. Redeeming a coupon would not be that bad if there were only a few of them, but major grocery chains collect millions of them. At that scale it becomes a major headache! The whole process seems hopelessly antiquated, but coupons remain enormously popular and that is why they continue. A coupon is, essentially, free money, and free money is hard to stop…

What Is The Difference Between ‘per Purchase’ And ‘per Transaction’ When Using Coupons

One coupon per purchase means you’re using one coupon per item being purchased. You can use multiples of the same coupon as long as each coupon has a matching item. One coupon per transaction means you can use only one specific coupon per store transaction. You can’t use more than one same coupon, even if you’re buying multiple items.

To Advertise A New Product

Consumers need to be enticed to take a chance on a new product, especially price-sensitive, coupon-using shoppers.

A company could advertise its new product by offering free samples, but instead of spending money both on the product itself and on getting the product into consumers’ homes, it could offer a tempting, high-value coupon and actually make a sale.

If the consumer likes the new product enough, they may buy it at full price in the future when introductory coupons are no longer available.

Tips On How To Use Them

Pharmacy discount coupons and manufacturer savings cards can be confusing if you havent used them before. Here are some tips to help you have a smooth transaction and get the best deal:

1) Always start by asking your doctor what the drug is for and if theres a cheaper alternative.

For example, if you are prescribed Crestor for high cholesterol, in many cases, you may be able to switch to generic atorvastatin or simvastatin . Crestor can cost more than $170 for a months supply even with a coupon, whereas generic atorvastatin can cost as little as $9.

2) Find out what your copay will be, but be patient.

If you have insurance, the only way for you to find out what your copay will be is for your pharmacy to process your prescription through your insurer. The same applies for prices after coupons or discounts. Wait a couple of minutes after dropping off your prescription to find out how much it will cost and if any issues need to be resolved.

3) Read the fine print.

Manufacturer coupons often require activation before use, and many require that you already have health insurance. Some may even use your health information to send marketing materials to you. So know what youre getting into. If you have insurance, remember that your plan or employer could end up covering the difference in cost, rather than the manufacturer.

4) Savings from pharmacy discount coupons can vary.

5) Use all the resources available to you and be informed!

You can find manufacturer coupons in the Sunday newspaper, home mailings, attached or inside the product, blinkie machines, or by .

Store Coupon

A store coupon is specific to the store listed on the coupon. You can find the store specific information on the coupon in a corner or in the fine print. It will say at the top next to the expiration date Store Coupon. Some stores will allow you to use a store coupon and a manufacturer coupon on a single item which can maximize your savings.

Store coupons are often found at the store or on the stores website.

When you checkout at the grocery store, you may get a Catalina printed from the stores coupon machine. I have a question to throw out to the readers just to see what their opinion is. We all know not to use more than 1 mfg coupon, but can you use more than 1 store coupon?

This deal was at WAGS winter of 2009 and sparked lots of shoppers over it and lots of comments. Theraflu was on sale for $4.99.

Use $2 off mfg couponUse $2 IVC coupon from their monthly coupon bookUse $2 IVC coupon from the Diabetes booklet

It was a $1 MM per box! Awesome deal!

    Was this deal legit?

  • May 12, 2011 at 6:10 pm

My first thought would beer, probably notbut I decided to go to WAGS Corporate Coupon Policy for this one. Heres what it reads:

When purchasing a single item, Walgreens accepts one manufacturer coupon and applicable Walgreens coupon for the purchase of a single item, unless prohibited by either coupon offer.

I found it interesting it reads applicable Walgreens coupon as in, the possibility of plural. That WOULD suggest to me the deal was legit, though it may depend on how your particular store interprets that.

    What do you think?

  • Why did Safeway stop allowing the use of e-coupons and mfgr coupons? Ever since then I stopped shopping there. No more cool deals.

Use Rebate Apps To Get Cash Back On Your Purchases And Save Big

We call Ibotta, Checkout 51, and Fetch Rewards rebate apps since you dont take any action until after youve checked out at the store. Lucky for us, they stack with almost everything.

Meaning if you can find a rebate that both Ibotta and Checkout 51 offer at the same time, you could possibly redeem both and also redeem your receipt through Fetch Rewards.

For Ibotta and Checkout51, youll unlock or select the product you want to buy and redeem an offer like $0.50 cash back when you buy Yoplait yogurt. Then, depending on which store youre shopping, youll either take a picture of your receipt to submit it or scan the receipt QR code at the bottom. Once its complete and youve reached $20, you can cash out via PayPal.

For Fetch Rewards just take a picture of any receipt to earn points that translate into gift cards to stores like Amazon and Target.
