What Is Plan B One

Plan B One-Step is a non-prescription emergency contraception pill for women who have had unprotected sex or who have used contraceptives that have failed during sex. Although Plan B One-Step is sold without a prescription for patients 18 and older, many states require a prescription for patients 17 or under.

Plan B One-Step’s active ingredient, levonorgestrel, prevents ovulation and changes the lining of the uterus to prevent the attachment of a fertilized egg and impede the movement of sperm.

Plan B One-Step is taken as a single dose within 72 hours of unprotected sex. Plan B One-Step does not prevent pregnancy if the fertilized egg has already attached to the uterus before Plan B One-Step has been taken. Its effectiveness as a contraceptive, then, declines quickly after the first 24 hours following unprotected sex.

What Side Effects They Have

As they contain the same amount of the same active ingredient, both Plan B and Take Action have identical potential side effects.

Nausea is common, along with stomach pain, headaches, and feeling tired or dizzy.

Some people may also experience changes in menstrual bleeding, whether thats heavier, lighter, or just irregular.

Breast or chest tenderness has also been reported.

Both EC pills are identical in the way they work and how effective they are. So your choice will likely be based on cost and accessibility.

Take Action is cheaper than Plan B but can be trickier to get hold of.

On the other hand, you should be able to easily find Plan B in a local drugstore or pharmacy.

Is Plan B An Abortion Pill Like R

Plan B Over The Counter

No. Plan B is used to prevent pregnancy whereas RU-486 terminates a pregnancy. Plan B will not work if you are already pregnant. Plan B uses high levels of levonorgestrel to 1) interrupt egg fertilization or 2) prevent or delay ovulation. Levonorgestrel is the synthetic hormone that’s been used in birth control pills for over 35 years.

You might wonder, Does this mean I can use my birth control pills as an emergency contraceptive? In some cases, yes. With certain birth control pills, four to five pills taken at once have the same effect as Plan B. Check here to see if your birth control pills can also be used as an emergency contraceptive.

Take Action Vs Plan B: What Are The Differences

When it comes to emergency contraception , there can be a lot of confusion. A great example: Whats the difference between Take Action and Plan B?

Well, both morning-after pills are pretty similar in a lot of ways, as they contain the same active ingredient.

But they also differ in a few ways, too.

To help you figure out which EC pill is best for you, weve rounded up all the information on both.

Choosing The Right Emergency Contraceptive

There are several factors to consider when deciding on the type of emergency contraception to use, such as:

  • When you had unprotected sex
  • How easy it is for you to get it
  • Your height and weight
  • If youve used the pill, patch, or ring in the last 5 days
  • Whether youre breastfeeding

Talk to a provider about the best emergency contraception method for you. You can call us 24/7 for advice or set up a same-day phone appointment with a provider. You can tell the provider about your situation and they can quickly give you a recommendation.

And if all else fails, remember that using whichever method you can get is still better than not using anything at all.

  • Take emergency contraception as soon as possible. The sooner the better.
  • Talk to your provider if youre not sure whether you should use the pill or IUD for emergency contraception.
  • If you want to get an IUD inserted, call the doctors office right away to set up an appointment.
  • Emergency contraceptive pills work only for one episode of unprotected sex. If you have unprotected sex again in the same month, you need to take it again and talk to your doctor about birth control options.
  • Don’t use 2 different kinds of morning-after pills at the same time. They may counteract each other.
  • It’s always a good idea to keep emergency contraceptive pills on hand in case you need it.

Plan B has been developed to also make changes in the cervical mucus and uterine lining, which are intended to try to make it more difficult for pregnancy to occur. However, at the stage when it can be taken, it is the best option at that point.

The morning after pill is commonly used when other forms of contraception was either not user or is suspected of failing to be effective. As with all other forms of morning after pill, Plan B should be taken sooner rather than later, in order to have a chance to be as effective as possible in preventing pregnancy.

With Plan B One Step is uncommon for a morning after pill being just a single pill for a woman to take, rather than two pills separated by 12 hours between consumption. With Plan B, technically it can be taken up to 72 hours after intercourse to prevent an unwanted child, however it can also be taken on the first day and the sooner the better.

The Morning After pill contains a hormone called Levonorgestrel, which is shown to prevent pregnancy after sex. More specifically, a tablet contains 1.5 mg of Levonorgestrel, which has a half-life of around 24 hours, according to research on its efficacy.

Levonorgestrel is not only used in the morning-after pill. It’s also used in lower doses in several hormonal birth control methods, including IUDs Liletta and Miren. Plan B is not the only form of emergency contraception that contains Levonorgestrel. Others include My Way and the AfterPill, both of which may be more affordable than Plan B.
