Customize Your Coupons General Settings

How to Create Smart Coupons in WooCommerce

Now youre ready to start designing your coupon. This is an important process. If youre too lax with your coupons settings, you could end up accidentally over-discounting your products, which could negatively impact your revenue.

First, create a title for your coupon. It should be short, descriptive, and easy to remember, as this is the code customers will enter during the checkout process to apply their discounts. You can also add a description, which will be visible only to you and not to your customers.

Next, youll want to scroll down to the Coupon data box. Start by filling out the information in the General tab. This includes the discount type, amount, free shipping option, and expiration date.

In WooCommerce, there are three types of coupons you can create:

  • Percentage discount: Lowers the price of either the customers entire cart or specific items by a specified percentage .
  • Fixed cart discount: Takes a specific amount off the customers total .
  • Fixed product discount: Takes a certain amount off the cost of specific items or categories .

Each type has its advantages its up to you to decide which you think will be most effective for your store. Either way, set your desired amount as a whole number. It will be applied as a fixed amount or a percentage, depending on which discount type you chose.

Apply Coupon To The Subtotal Cart Value

Now, lets say that instead of adding discounts based on the products, you want to apply a coupon in WooCommerce when customers spend more than $50 in your store. This is a great way to reward your shoppers and encourage them to spend more money on your site. So, with the following function, you can apply a coupon only when the cart subtotal value is more than 50.

add_action function QuadLayers_apply_coupon_cart_values

Of course, you can replace $50 in the script for any other amount that makes more sense for your business. Also note that in the conditional, were using the same WC object instances that we used before to control exactly when we add or remove the coupon. The WC-> cart-> subtotal allows you to know the cart subtotal, storing its value in the $cart_ST variable.

Finally, keep in mind that you must use WC-> cart-> calculate_totals to recalculate the total amount of the cart after applying the coupon.

The idea is not to miss out on an opportunity to ensure the coupon code is sent to anyone interested in your business.

You might also use restrictions to encourage customers to increase their spending. For example, setting a minimum spend can prompt customers to add more items to their carts, in order to qualify for the coupon.

To set some rules, select the Usage restriction tab. Here, you can start by setting a minimum and a maximum spend:

You can also prevent the customer from using this offer in conjunction with other coupons. This setting can be particularly useful if youre running multiple discounts and want to prevent customers from applying a list of coupons to the same item.

You can also prevent customers from applying a coupon to items that are already on sale. This can ensure that you always receive a fair price for your products. To set this restriction, select the Exclude sale items checkbox.
