Is The Freestyle Libre Waterproof

Make Your Freestyle Libre Sensor Stick and Last for 14 Days (Tips, Tricks, and Hacks)

Itâs not waterproof. Itâs water resistant for up to one meter for around 30 minutes. However, FreeStyle Libre Abbot has stated that âintense activities whereby a user is continually moving or repeatedly in and out of the water, may reduce the sensor wear timeâ.

What this basically means is, itâs not ideal for jumping in and out of the pool/sea and waterparks arenât ideal .

My only suggestion is that you tape it down extremely well with medical tape, or something similar to try and keep it down.

Freestyle Libre Now Available In Major Us Pharmacies

Abbotts no-calibration CGM available at pharmacies like CVS and Walgreens for a cash price ranging from about $36-$53/10-day sensor get cost and prescription details here

Want more news just like this?

Two months after approval by the Food and Drug Administration , Abbotts FreeStyle Libre continuous glucose monitor is now on the shelves of major pharmacies in the US, including CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, Rite Aid, and Krogers/Smiths. The long awaited sensor finally comes to the US more than three years after it launched in Europe. Here are all the details on how to get one and what it costs.

Hold Up What Is Freestyle Libre

FreeStyle Libre consists of a small, water-proof, fully disposable sensor worn on the arm for 10 days, plus a reader device. When scanned over the sensor, the reader shows a real-time glucose reading and trend arrow, which is approved to dose insulin without an accompanying fingerstick. Unlike other CGM devices, FreeStyle Libre does not require any fingerstick calibrations. However, it does have a 12-hour warmup period after insertion , meaning users will need to take fingersticks during that time. Its possible to get around this if a user buys two readers and overlaps sensor wear times more on that here.

FreeStyle Libre is considered a continuous glucose monitor , since it collects a glucose value every minute and displays a number and trend arrow on the reader. However, it does not have alarms and does not communicate continuously with the handheld reader device as other CGM devices do . To obtain a real-time glucose number and trend, the sensor must be manually scanned using the reader device. This can be done through clothing, making it far less visible, obtrusive, and painful than a fingerstick. Libres readings are not impacted by acetaminophen . At launch, FreeStyle Libre does not have smartphone connectivity, so users will not be able to share data with caregivers via LibreLinkUp.

What Is Freestyle Libre 14 Day Sensor

Freestyle Libre 14 Day Sensor is an FDA-approved continuous glucose monitoring system that consists of a handheld reader and a sensor that is worn on your upper arm. It is used as a replacement for the fingerstick and blood glucose meter method of monitoring blood sugar levels in diabetic patients aged 18 years and older. This device can be used by patients who are suffering from both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and can detect instances of both low and high blood glucose levels.

This Flash Glucose Monitoring System is a 14-day reader, which involves a sensor being applied to the back of the arm. Since the sensor pierces the skin, standard precautions for possible transmission of blood should be taken. The sensor uses a flexible, thin filament inserted just under your skin to measure glucose levels every minute. A handheld reader is then used to scan the sensor which provides a blood glucose reading.

It is also possible to use your mobile phone to read your blood sugar levels and store glucose data instead of a handheld. You just need to install the Freestyle Librelink app on a phone that is NFC-enabled and running either Android OS 5.0 and higher or iPhone 7 or later.

This blood glucose monitoring system is meant for single patient use and should not be reused. It also contains small parts that may be dangerous if swallowed. Speak to your pharmacist for more important safety information, full indications, and general product information.

When Will Insurance Companies Medicare And Medicaid Cover Freestyle Libre How Much Will I Have To Pay Out Of Pocket When It Is Covered

Abbott is currently in reimbursement talks for FreeStyle Libre with US insurance companies, Medicare, and Medicaid. diaTribe expects that the FreeStyle Libre will eventually qualify for Medicare coverage since the FDA approved it as a replacement for routine fingersticks in making treatment decisions, similar to Dexcoms G5, which is now covered by Medicare. We expect FreeStyle Libre will have a copay in pharmacies once decisions about reimbursement are reached, which will obviously vary based on the insurance plan. Copays can often be as low as $0 or $15 per month, though its not clear what insurance companies will charge patients once the device is covered. There is not a set timeline for when coverage might be announced or begin. To receive the latest updates on reimbursement, sign up at www.freestylelibre.us.

How Does The Freestyle Libre Sensor Compare To A Cgm

First, letâs define what exactly a CGM is . As quoted by Dexcom:

“A CGM is an FDA-approved device that provides continuous insight into glucose levels throughout the day and night. The device displays information about glucose direction and speed providing users additional information to help with their diabetes management.”

Now, the million dollar question is, âIs The FreeStyle Libre a CGM?â

Well, according to their USA website, Libre is a…

“continuous glucose monitoring device indicated for replacing blood glucose testing and detecting trends and tracking patterns aiding in the detection of episodes of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia, facilitating both acute and long-term therapy adjustments in persons with diabetes.â

…however, on the rest of their global websites, it shows no mention of it being a CGM. And, actually, I donât think it can be considered one.

The FreeStyle Libre is a flash glucose monitoring system, which works by glucose readings taken from the interstitial fluid , a thin layer of fluid that surrounds the cells of the tissues below your skin.

The Freestyle Libre System does not provide you with alarms notifying you that you are going low or high, which other CGMS such as Dexcom and Medtronic do. The use of an alarm is different for everyone, but the ability to have an alarm tell you in the night if you are going low could save your life.

Abbott’s Freestyle Libre 2 Cgm Picks Up Medicare Coverage

Abbott announced yesterday that its recently cleared FreeStyle Libre 2 integrated continuous glucose monitoring system is now covered by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services , and available to Medicare beneficiaries with diabetes who meet eligibility criteria.

Indicated for diabetes management in patients aged four years or older, the updated version of Abbott’s system can sound the alarm when a user’s glucose is out of range. Data from a 14-day upper-arm sensor is transmitted to a handheld device, which the wearer can use to view their current readings and recent trends.

“Abbott designed the FreeStyle Libre portfolio for performance, access and affordability to make it broadly available to people with diabetes who need it,” Jared Watkin, SVP of diabetes care at Abbott, said in a statement. “By securing reimbursement, Abbott is making sure our latest life-changing technology can get to everyone who needs it, whether they’re children, adults or seniors eligible for Medicare.”

According to the CDC and CMS, diabetes affects roughly 25% of U.S. adults aged 65 years or older.

While prior devices in the FreeStyle Libre family have already been available to this population, access to the Libre 2’s automated alert features could simplify the challenges of glucose management for these older adults.
