Whale Watching In Provincetown

A Prime P-town Pastime

In 1975, 4 years after the U.S. government — fearing the species’ extinction — called an official halt to whaling, fisherman Al Avellar noticed that they seemed to be making a comeback in the Stellwagen Bank feeding area, 8 miles off Provincetown. Together with marine biologist Charles “Stormy” Mayo of the Center for Coastal Studies, he came up with the notion of a new kind of hunt, spearheaded by tourists bearing cameras. An immediate success, the Dolphin Fleet/Portuguese Princess, which works with the Center for Coastal Studies and uses its naturalists on the trips, on MacMillan Wharf , was widely copied up and down the coast. These are still the prime feeding grounds, however, which is why all the whale-watching fleets can confidently “guarantee” sightings — they offer a rain check should the cetaceans fail to surface. Prices for whale-watching trips are $39 for adults, $36 for seniors, $29 for children 5 to 12, and free for children 4 and under. Discounts of $3 off are available for AAA memberships and by using coupons available at the chamber of commerce.

Another good Cape Cod whale-watch organization is Capt. John Boats, which operates 4-hour trips daily in season out of Plymouth Harbor in Plymouth, about 20 miles north of the Sagamore Bridge . Prices are $43 for adults, $36 for seniors 62 and over, and $29 for children 12 and under.

No matter where you’re staying on Cape Cod, there’s a whale watching cruise reasonably nearby.

Whale watch cruises leave from two places on Cape Cod:

  • Barnstable Harbor

When To Book Cape Cod Whale Watching Cruises

Its possible to hop on a whale watch tour without buying tickets ahead of time. But, we highly recommend that you book in advance, especially if you plan to go with a group. Boat capacities fill up really fast during the summer months, and reserving tickets in advance will secure a spot for you.

The cost of whale watching ranges from about $25 per child to $45 per adult. Of course, private charters could be more expensive. You might be able to find discounts and coupons through advertising promotions at local shops or on Groupon.

Spotting Whales From The Cape Cod Shore

You might wonder if you can see whales from Cape Cods shore. Although its less likely than riding a boat into the bay, its possible to catch a glimpse of whales as they breach the surface to breathe or jump out of the water. The best place to see them from the shore is Race Point Beach, which is situated on the northern tip of the peninsula. This beach is closest to Stellwagen Bank.

To see whales from the shoreline, skim the surface of the water with a pair of binoculars or a camera with a strong zoom lens. You can tell a whale from the shore by its spout, which is the puff of air and water that they exhale. On the other hand, you may see its open mouth lunge out of the water or its tail splash.

Where Whale Watching Boats Go To See Whales

Whale Watch with Captain John Boats – May 3, 2018

When the whales migrate north, they go to the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary to feed on the abundant plankton and schools of fish. This area is located east of Boston between Cape Cod and Cape Ann. Its a historically vital fishing ground and the only national marine sanctuary in New England. Generally, Cape Cod whale watching cruises go to this area to give tourists a close-up look at these majestic creatures.

Best Months For Seeing Whales

are prime time!

During the summer, the Humpback whales are here, along with Finback whales, Minke whales, and their colorful “cousins” the Atlantic White-sided dolphin.

On our trip to the whale grounds this past June, we saw so many whales that I lost count. Awe-inspiring, even for an “old salt” like me!

Here’s a quick clip from a video I shot that day …

History Of Whale Watching In Cape Cod Bay

Whales have played an important role in Cape history. Because they were plentiful in the surrounding waters, it became profitable to hunt them for parts to use in consumer products. With large whale hunting fleets, the peninsulas economy boomed. The practice wasnt banned until the 1980s in order to protect the mammals from extinction.

In 1975, though, a group of people went on the first recreational whale-watching cruise around the Cape. Since then, navigating the bay and interacting with the whales has given tour operators knowledge that they can pass onto you during your Cape Cod whale watching trip.

What To Expect On Whale Watching Cape Cod Cruises

Every year, an estimated 130 kinds of whales and other marine life can be found around the Cape. Among the several types of whales, common sightings include:

  • Humpback whales
  • Right whales
  • Minke whales

The minke whale is the smallest, averaging 25 to 35 feet long as an adult. You have a very good chance of seeing at least one whale species during your whale watch trip. In fact, its uncommon for there to be no whale sightings. In some cases, the guides can share personal stories about the whales.

Best Weather For Whale Watching

Captain John Whale Watching and Fishing Tours in ...

Some days on the ocean are better than others. When you’re trying to pick a perfect day for whale watching, keep these two things in mind: offshore water conditions and the weather.

Offshore Water Conditions

Are you a fan of rockin’ and rollin’ boat rides in big seas? I doubt it! So, how can you gauge the offshore water conditions before you get out there?

Keep an eye on the !

Look for a day when light wind is in the forecast and seas are predicted to be 2 feet or less. Those are the best days to be on the water! Are you skeptical about the forecast? Call the whale watch cruise provider, and ask for their advice. They’ll give you the straight scoop. Believe me, they don’t want a bunch of barfy passengers onboard any more than you want to be one of those barfy passengers! -)

Weather Conditions

Of course, we all hope for blue skies and sunshine for our whale watching days. Don’t despair, though, if Mother Nature isn’t totally cooperative while you’re here. Rain showers in the forecast? That’s not a big deal. The cruise boats have lots of indoor space for getting out of the weather. Pack a hooded rain slicker , and you’ll be all set to head out on deck to see the whales up close.

Will you see whales when it’s raining? Sure! Remember … whales live in water. A little more water coming from the sky doesn’t bother them a bit. They still swim, feed and play, even when it’s raining!
